This Mafalda comic to me represents all of the messages that Quino was typically trying to portray about pessimism and optimism and that Mafalda is generally pessimistic about the world. In this particular cartoon however, Mafalda asks her mother what to do if happiness comes knocking on the door while her mother is gone. Because there is no response from the mother or cartoon to follow the question it leaves the cartoon open to the reader/viewer for interpretation. To me it seems as though happiness won't ever come for Mafalda and that is why her mother does not answer her in a cartoon to follow. Latin America at times was and still is a place of constant motion, stress, corruption, and often the only request heard is to be happy. This is all Mafalda is seeking.
